New Advisor OrientationThe focus of this stage of training is to create a foundation of knowledge and skills in each of the five areas that allows academic, and career advisors and counselors, to begin work with a sufficient foundation of knowledge and skill in advising students. This New Advisor Orientation will consist of up to two weeks of training wherein new advisors and counselors spend the morning in training sessions with an advisor trainer and the afternoon in their departments shadowing, observing, and applying what they have learned. The training will include a conceptual overview of advising in general and at UVSC, training in the use of Banner and other technological resources, information regarding basic policies, procedures, and resources, and development of relational advising skills. Throughout the process, the personal aspect will also be addressed through discussion of what it means to be an advisor and why it is valuable to be an advisor. In addition, the personal values that contribute to successful advising of students will be explored and discussed. The training begins on the first day of employment and the morning training sessions occur in a classroom/computer lab using lecture, discussion, and hands-on computer exercises. Day1: Advising at UVSC overviews what academic advising is all about in general and within the specific context of UVSC.
Day 2: An introduction to the Banner Online System we use for advising.
Day 3: An overview of how to use the Banner screens to engage in advising processes such as clearing a new student, evaluating a degree, etc.
Day 4: An in depth training on how to effectively engage in the advising process (Greeting to closure and follow-up) with an emphasis on the developmental advising practice.
We also do a campus resource tour in the afternoon
Day 5: Helping students when they experience stress and challenges. The focus is on policies and procedures related to academic standards, student rights and responsibilities, personal health and wellness issues, etc.
