Disability Information
Students with disabilities seek to be educated at UVSC, partially as a result of UVSC's:
- Facility accessibility
- Quality of accommodative services available
- Open door admission and competitive tuition fees
The mission of the Accessibility Services Department at UVSC is to comply with federal and state laws. This ensures that no qualified individual with a disability be:
- Excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of services, programs, or activities of UVSC, or
- Subjected to discrimination by the college or its personnel.
Documentation
A diagnosis in and of itself is not necessarily considered a disability.
In order to qualify as a disability under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), the following needs to be addressed in writing by a licensed professional with expertise in the area of the diagnosis: diagnosis, including diagnostic code(s); medications and mitigating measures; after considering mitigating measures, describe the functional limitations and their impact on major life activities; and then provide recommendations for accommodations. The documentation should demonstrate that the diagnosis substantially limits a major life activity in comparison to the average adult in society.
Types of Disabilities
The Accessibility Services Department provides accommodative services for qualified students with the following diagnoses/disabilities:
- Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
- Blind
- Low vision
- Deaf
- Hearing loss
- Learning disabilities
- Head injuries: traumatic brain injuries
- Medical (i.e. diabetes; epilepsy; multiple sclerosis; and others).
- Physical disabilities
- Psychiatric disabilities: mood disorders such as Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and others.
- Chronic Illness
If you have not previously been diagnosed as having one of these disabilities, but suspect that you may be eligible to receive accommodative services, please contact the Accessibility Services Department for a referral. Some testing is available on campus through Student Health Services (SC 221).
Handicapped Parking
Campus Maps
In order to be issued a disabled parking permit from UVSC, you must first obtain a disabled permit from the State of Utah. To purchase a
disabled parking permit, you need to complete a permit form and provide proof of emissions testing. If the vehicle is registered in Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, or Weber counties, the registration is proof of emissions testing.
If you have a temporary need for a disabled parking permit, you must first obtain a note from a doctor stating how long you will need the permit. Present this documentation to parking services, and a temporary permit may be issued.
