Academic courses at UVSC can be used to earn Continuing Education Hours (CEH's) in for both the Utah Interpreter Program and the RID's system. Even courses that don't appear directly related to interpreting may count. In order to get credit for these hours the students must apply to either the RID or the UIP. Below arestep-by-step directions for how to go about this.
Step One:
Verify the course or program you want to receive credit for has to be from an accredited college or university. (UVSC is fully-accredited so there is no need to worry about this step.)
Step Two:
Student contacts and RID Approved Sponsor to secure theur agreement to process the paper for the course. (The local sponsor is UtRID through Holly Nelson hgreenland@gmail.com or Jennifer Storrer jstorrer@utah.gov) Be sure to discuss the Content Area for which you are applying (Professional Studies or General Studies) and how many CEUs will be earned. The standard formula for determining the number of CEUs per course is as follows: 1.5 CEU per credit for a course taken in a semester session or 1.0 CEUs per credit for a course taken in a quarter session. Students can apply for academic approval anytime within their certification cycle. They can apply for the entire program or semseter by semester.
Step Three:
Complete the Academic Coursework Activity Plan and Activity Report form from the sponsor. Attach pertinent documentation (course outline and documentation that college/university is accredited). Return form and documentation to the sponsor, who will keep the form until the coursework is completed.
Step Four:
Upon completion of the course/program or if the course had been completed, attain a copy of your transcript procing a grade of "C" or better. Submit a transcript copy to the sponsor.
Step One: Complete the Continuing Education Hours Approval application before the course has completed. Students could do it semester by semseter or for the entire program. It must be done in advance to receive credit. Students can download the form on www.aslterps.utah.gov then go to "downloadable forms" then click on "CEH Approval Form for Interpreters". Students can use the course outline to help complete the form.
Step Two:
Submit the form to UIP
