Areas of Emphasis

Painting and Drawing
If you love to draw and paint, you'll probably love to study drawing and painting at UVSC.

Learn from the masters. Contemporary masters, that is. Bob DeWitt and Perry Stewart are known for giving students a strong grounding in the basics, especially in the anatomy of the human figure. (Need proof? Check out their
student work to the right.) If you're interested in more non-traditional, abstract painting you'll love taking classes from Catherine Downing and Hyun Mee Lee. You could say our department is like a well-balanced meal--an art
buffet, if you will.

Photography
It's true that everyone goes through a "photography" phase. It's just that for some people, that phase lasts a lifetime. If you think you're in that category, you'd better check out UVSC's outstanding photography program.

Our program initially stresses the basics. Once you've got those down, better hold onto your seat because you are in the for the ride of your life. Experimentation, risk taking and pushing for images that are far beyond
cliche are what Simon Blundell and the other photo instructors demand. Where will that get you? If you're talented enough, you may be like one of a handful of graduates that assist the biggest names in photography in New
York City. Of course, plenty of grads stay around here to shoot, too. Enter our program and your skills are sure to, well, develop (pardon the pun).

Illustration
Are your notebooks, notes and bookcovers covered in doodles? You may be an illustrator in the making.

What's an illustrator? Someone who creates images for magazine articles, packaging, brochures and more. Good drawing and painting skills are a must. Perry Stewart, who heads up the illustration program, has won many national
awards for his work and so have his students. If you're interested in animation, you'll also want to look at our illustration program. Along with drawing skills, you'll learn storyboarding and the latest and greatest
software used to create computer animation. Just think, you could be doodling your way to a career (if only everyone else would believe that).

Graphic Design
What if you like  to doodle, to design posters or web pages, or to play video games? What should you study? Graphic design would be a natural place to start, since designers do all of those things. It also helps if you don't
like to sleep very much (you'll be playing on the computer all night).

Jim Godfrey heads up the graphic design program, with Larry Holt and Jon Turner being key contributors. At UVSC, you won't just learn software, you'll learn how to create projects designers work on everyday, whether its
designing a layout for a magazine (called editorial design by design geeks), creating a logo for a business (that's corporate identity) or designing an interface for a rock band (that means web design). You'll learn to use
design principles and strategies that not only make stuff look cool, but also bring results to clients (the people you do work for). And the icing on the cake is that you can actually make a living doing it. Sound fun? It is.

Ceramics and Sculpture
Mention throwing something and most people think of a football or baseball. You know you're a ceramics major, however, if you dream of throwing clay.

Ceramics, along with sculpture, is part of the 3-D program in the Art and Visual Communication department. Come to UVSC and you'll receive a strong foundation of design fundamentals, technical skills and the use of
materials. You'll discover endless sources of creative ideas as you work and develop physical skill and fundamental knowledge. Mark Talbert, who is the head of the 3-D program, has produced students that have gone on to
post-graduate studies at Edinburgh University and Utah State University. Studying ceramics at UVSC may be a dream come true.
