Our mission is to prepare students to write for academic audiences.

The Basic Composition Department assists traditional and non-traditional students who want to improve their writing skills. Our courses prepare students for additional writing classes. Through a portfolio system, our program emphasizes writing as a process; and our students produce refined prose to support discussions, opinions, and research. Basic Composition teachers maintain a student-centered pedagogy with instruction explaining the informative and persuasive writing process. Our teaching practices include journal writing, peer review, collaborative learning, online instruction, and conferences with teachers.
