Composition Committee
The five full-time faculty members in the Department of Basic Composition form the Composition Committee. This committee sets policy, revises curriculum, and monitors the quality of composition instruction.
Composition Committee Membership and Areas of Responsibility:
Forrest Williams, Department Chair:
Represents the department to various campus groups. Hires adjunct faculty. Schedules classes. Evaluates and supervises faculty and staff in the Department of Basic Composition. Resolves student and faculty concerns.
Melinda Bender, Faculty Liaison and Web Page Coordinator:
Coordinates classroom observations. Collects course syllabi. Communicates with contract and adjunct faculty. Provides sample course syllabi to new faculty members. Updates and maintains department web pages.
Kaye Jeffery, Placement Coordinator:
Directs the efforts associated with placement decisions and timed essays. Develops and refines training materials for rating sessions.
Deborah Marrott, Portfolios Coordinator:
Coordinates the pairing of faculty so that two faculty members complete a "read around" or grading of one shared essay for ENGH 0890 and ENGH 0990 courses. Communicates to faculty how to use the grading rubric for the shared assignment and how to resolve "split decisions" on a paper's grade. Evaluates A, B, and C portfolios for consistency across sections.
Rich Matzen, Outcome Assessment and Department Research Coordinator:
Collects and analyzes timed-essay scores, questionnaire results, and shared assignment grades. Works with ASU regarding outside verification of holistic scoring of timed essays and shared-assignment papers. Develops "new" areas of growth such as using a timed essay and post-tests and researching how well ENGH 0990 may prepare students for ENGL 1010.
