Faculty Development

For both ENGH 0890 and 0990, faculty members are given flexibility to create their courses within a decided framework. Although teachers create individual assignments for papers, the papers are to satisfy specific curricular objectives, and students' papers are to constitute a portfolio. Another way that teachers make decisions within a decided framework is by choosing a reader from a list of recommended readers. Nevertheless, all faculty use the same handbook.

Instead of having a "master syllabus," faculty create their own syllabi for courses within department guidelines. The student portfolios represent and maintain the meeting of shared curricular objectives, and the portfolios become a means for sharing ideas. Portfolios are then shared among faculty for pedagogical and teaching means.

Additionally, each semester, faculty submit a sample A, B, and C portfolio. Faculty choose a representative portfolio receiving an A and so on, and these portfolios are then reviewed by faculty for outcome assessment, institutional research, and faculty development.

At the end of each semester, a questionnaire is administered to students to give each faculty member additional information regarding their courses; faculty also observe each other in the classroom for further teaching ideas and faculty development.
