Steve Teeter has been a professor in the School of Business at Utah Valley State College for 18 years. Steve is an excellent teacher and a valuable member of the faculty of the School of Business. He received the Faculty Excellence Award for the School of Business for 2005-2006. He inspires the students to do well. The following statement from his professional web page states his philosophy of education.

"An education is not a true education unless it is real, that is to say useful in a students life outside the classroom regardless of the field they go into. I believe in students coming first and having the right to a great education - an education that encompasses a balance of academics, real-world exposure, high expectancy from themselves and from me their instructor, rigor, and an environment where students have the opportunity to succeed and be the best they can be. If we can help our students succeed, they will thirst for more success which will, in turn, benefit our college, our community, and our society."

The School of Business was the first school on campus to have its own alumni chapter, and for the past six years, Steve has served as the faculty advisor for that group. His enthusiasm, expertise, and strong support have been the most important factors in building this very successful organization. The chapter currently has a strong and active board that meets monthly, under Steve's direction, to plan and implement events.

The School of Business Alumni Chapter has been very active during homecoming week. For three years they have sponsored and managed a pinewood derby, The Great Race. While the chapter uses this event to raise money for needs-based scholarships, many other benefits are obvious. Students, faculty, and administration join in this half-day event that creates spirit and support for the school. Local newspapers cover the event, providing publicity for both the school and the college. Steve's support and enthusiasm have made this a very successful experience for everyone involved.

Another homecoming event is the tailgate party prior to the homecoming basketball game. Last year over 350 people attended including alumni, faculty, and staff. Pizza was served, and everyone received free tickets to the game. Again, Steve and his wife, Lorna, were instrumental in making arrangements and insuring that everyone in attendance took home great memories.

Steve works to recruit graduates into the School of Business Alumni Chapter. At graduation, the alumni board has a booth to welcome new alumni. Each graduate is given a tee shirt and an application to join the group. Steve also works with the athletics department to provide free tickets for students to basketball games. Again, his enthusiasm helps to engender the same enthusiasm among the students, who are the future alumni.

Tamara Jensen has been employed at UVSC for the past ten years and she received her bachelor's degree in 2003. Currently, she is the financial manager for the Woodbury School of Business. In addition, Jensen also serves as a member of the School of Business Strategic Planning Committee and is a member of the School of Business Alumni Board, recruiting graduates into the School of Business Alumni Chapter. The past few years, Jensen has also been influential in the success of the School of Business alumni activities during Homecoming Week on campus.

After taking several difficult classes that required scrupulous note taking during lectures, Ian Davis, a junior and accounting major, came up with the idea to utilize today's electronic media to help students effectively study lecture material. Davis hopes that his program will help students retain lecture material, by making lectures a little less demanding. Davis and Hugh Rode, professor of legal studies, started what they call a "web lecture service" for one of Rode's classes.

The service allows students to view class lectures online within an hour after the actual presentation. Davis' goal is to create a medium that will allow students to relax and focus on the lecture without having to take extensive notes. The students can then review the lectures online to gather any material that they may have missed.

Davis is also using the project as a means to research how and if this teaching medium is effective. Davis is able to confidentially compare students UV ID's that log in to view the videos, with class attendance and corresponding test scores.

Davis applied and was recently accepted to present his research findings at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in San Rafael, Calif., this April. Davis will be giving a 15 minute oral presentation titled, "The Myths and Realities of Online Teaching Supplements."
