Real Estate Course FAQ's

Why should I take real estate classes if I do not intend to become a professional real estate agent?

Most students enroll in these classes to learn to become intelligent and well-prepared homebuyers and and/or real estate investors. The classes discuss real estate, appraisal and mortgage fraud that takes advantage of many consumers.

What real estate classes are offered at UVSC?

The Legal Studies Department at UVSC offers two real estate classes: Legal Studies 3130 (Real Estate Principles and Finance) and Legal Studies 3140 (Utah Real Estate Law). The Utah Division of Real Estate has authorized UVSC to provide Utah pre-licensing courses.

Do the real estate classes offered fulfill the requirements to take the Utah Real Estate licensing exam?

Yes, you must take both courses to be eligible to take the two-part Utah real estate exam to become a licensed real estate professional in Utah, but most UVSC students take these courses to become intelligent homebuyers.

* LEGL 3130 (Real Estate Principles and Finance) fulfills the requirement for the national portion of the Utah State Real Estate Sales Examination. The course covers the nature of real property, estates in land, transfer of real property rights, encumbrances, public restrictions, contracts, agency, ethics, brokerage functions, property management, economics, real estate finance, appraisal, federal regulations, math and escrow/closing statements.

* LEGL 3140 (Utah Real State Law) fulfills the requirement for the state of the Utah State Real Estate Sales Examination. The course focuses on the real estate purchase agreement and forms, Utah licensing laws, disciplinary proceedings, penalties, property taxes, land use, liens, and landlord-tenant laws.

How much is tuition?

Tuition is based on the credit hours taken. Each course is three credits. Current tuition costs are listed at http://www.uvsc.edu/tuition/

How long to the real estate classes take to complete?

It takes one semester, or 7 1/2 weeks per class; however, the courses are frequently taught in one-half semester blocks to enable a student to complete both courses in one semester. Block 1 takes three weeks and covers LEGl 3130. Block 2 takes another 3 weeks and covers LEGL 3140. You can finish both classes in one semester.

When are the classes offered?

The courses are taught each semester. Check the website for current class listings. http://www.uvsc.edu/schedule/

I have taken the courses and I am ready to the two-part Utah Real Estate License exam. What do I do now?

After you have completed LEGL 3130 and LEGL 3140 you will be given a “Utah Real Estate Candidate Handbook” and stamped “Candidate Education Certifying Document”. The handbook contains complete instructions for taking the exams at a nearby Promissor Testing Center. Check www.promissor.com for more details. Consult the Utah Division of Real Estate website for complete instructions on how to become a licensed Utah real estate professional: http://www.realestate.utah.gov/

Important: After completing both courses, you have one year to take both tests and complete the licensing procedure. If you are not ready to become an active real estate professional, you may take the tests anyway and place your license on “inactive” status.

The UVSC Real Estate Director is Robert Y. Valentine, CRS, GRI, PhD, a licensed Utah real estate agent and licensed Utah real estate instructor. Bob is eager to email you with a copy of the course syllabi and to answer your questions at ryvalentine@comcast.net
