Campus Standards for Computer Hardware

Desktops

All desktops on campus must be purchased through UVU's Computer Shop. The Computer Shop carries all campus standard hardware. Please place your order online at www.uvsc.edu/computershop. Contact information is on the website if you have any additional questions. If you have a special need for a desktop that can not be built by the Computer Shop, you will be required to fill out a Standards Exception Form. This form will need to be approved by Ray Walker or Bruce Parker before any order can be considered for processing.

Laptops

Several Laptops have been approved to use on campus. These laptops were chosen for their compatibility with campus standards. The following brand-name laptops may be purchased for use on Campus providing they come with a 3 year warranty and **Windows XP Professional: Dell, Epro, Gateway, HP, IBM, MPC, Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba. Any Macintosh Powerbook/laptop is allowed. By keeping to these standards Information Technology will be able to load and repair software on your laptop without having to research and search for drivers.

The most popular laptops purchased for campus use are Dell and Toshiba laptops. If you are interested in buying one of these laptops, please follow the links below to access the most current models and educational pricing.

Dell Laptops:
If you are interested in specifications and pricing for a Dell laptop, please contact Angie Duke. The Dell representative, Richard Green, will then email you access to log in to the Dell website. This website will offer you pricing for UVU so it is important to view this site versus looking at the consumer site.

You will need to submit a requisition in Banner to order your laptop. Please remember that each laptop on campus must come with a 3 year warranty, Optical Drive and **Windows XP Professional (Media Center and Windows Tablet acceptable as well). AMD and Celeron processors are not campus approved. If ordering a Dell laptop, please provide the E-Quote number in your requisition. For all other laptops, please send your exact specifications to Angie Duke at dukean@uvu.edu or fax to 794-0370.

** The Help Desk is not supporting computers with Vista at this time and highly recommends having Windows XP Professional as the operating system. The Help Desk is currently working out some issues with Vista but problems with printing, wireless connections and hardware compatibility has not yet been solved. You may purchase a laptop with Vista but please be aware that it may not be supported by the Help Desk and any technical issues you may have may be your responsibility. Downgrading to XP may be an option but the Help Desk has run into several laptops that can not be loaded with XP once purchased with Vista (you may want to check with the Help Desk about this if you have questions to which laptops).

Printers

Hewlett Packard is the only campus approved brand for printers that can be hooked up to the network. Be sure that if you want your printer to be networkable that the part number ends in a ā€œnā€. Please visit the government site at www.hp.com for the most current HP printer models and pricing.
