You lament that Mr Worthington's article (though it says nothing of the sort. as I have explained above) 'has created an inaccurate and distressing representation of our views'. Thus the only factor in this terrible story which 'distresses' you is that of being criticized in a newspaper published in a free country, regrettably not susceptible to being silenced by Britain's carefully crafted libel laws, or covert Foreign Office interference with the legal process. On the other hand flinging pregnant women into cattle-trucks for despatch to slave-labour camps, or flinging babies against lorries, does not 'distress' your equanimity or that of your colleagues one whit.
I trust you enjoy your semi-detached suburban respectability and hard-earned pension. I certainly I do not envy you. One question does trouble me, however. Recently a number of long-term traitors working for the Soviet Union within the Foreign Office and associated secret service bodies have been exposed, and in some cases actually confessed to their treachery. Yet none has or will be prosecuted for the most serious crime which a decent citizen could contemplate. Is there an explanation for this?
Yours faithfully,
Count Nikolai Tolstoy
