USU Horticulture Program at UVU

Welcome to the USU Oramental Horticulture program at UVU. This program is a partnership between of Utah State University and UVU. We are delighted that you are interested in the study of horticulture. It is a growing and rewarding field (pun intended). Horticulture in Utah is a billion-dollar industry with jobs available in many areas, including the following:

The Horticulture classes taught at UVU are offered by Utah State University, and are part of a larger USU-based Horticulture Program that also offers classes in Salt Lake, Ogden, and at our main campus in Logan. Recently the partnership with UVU was modified to work more closely with the UVU Biology Department to offer an Associate of Applied Science (from USU) option to Biology majors. Biology students who enroll in the Horticulture Program can receive their AAS from USU and have the Horticulture classes fill their elective requirements for the UVU Biology degree. This means they can still keep their anticipated graduation date, and end up with degrees awarded from both outstanding institutions. This arrangement may also work for students pursuing other majors, with permission from their department and/or academic advisors. USU is well known and respected both locally and nationally for their Horticulture and related programs. The courses have a wide range of real-life value and application.

Students take their General Education classes (and some core classes that will transfer to USU) from UVU or other qualified institution, depending on where you live, and then take their Horticulture (core) classes through USU. The Horticulture degree is actually awarded by USU. Students can work on a one-year certificate, AAS Degree, or BS Degree, all in Horticulture, although the program at UVU is tailored to the AAS Degree. Students can obtain a B.S. in Horticulture with travel to Salt Lake and/or Kaysville for some classes. Many classes are now offered through interactive broadcast and may or may not be face-to-face, depending on your location. Online courses in General Education are also offered through Utah State University, but follow their own tuition and fee schedule.

For the Associate degree program, the horticulture classes are offered on a two-year rotating basis. All approved classes taken for the AAS degree will also count toward a one-year certificate and Bachelor of Science degree. Registration for the horticulture classes is done at UVU through a local USU Registration Center, or online at www.usu.edu. Contact Eloise Young at 863-8333 for registration questions. Students cannot register for the USU Horticulture classes through the UVU registration system, because the classes are offered through Utah State University.

If you have been awarded Financial aid, then learn about the Consortium agreement that allows you to split financial aid between 2 Utah Schools. This type of agreement requires that you be admitted to USU before the agreement can be set up. If you are not receiving financial aid, it is not necessary to be admitted to USU to begin taking the Horticulture classes. However, if you are planning on receiving a certificate or degree from USU, then you must get admitted as soon as possible to facilitate advising and graduation.
