UVU 9th Annual Forum on Children's Literature

Entertains and Inspires

Orem, UTAH- Since the Harry Potter phenomenon and some would argue before, interest in children's literature has skyrocketed. Titles once meant for adults are now marketed to teens and vice versus. Crossover between books and their movie counterpart is at an all time high. Riding this wave of interest, UVU Conferences & Workshops is sponsoring the 9th annual Forum on Children's Literature. There are 4 attendee focus areas: teachers, librarians, authors and illustrators.

The Forum on Children's Literature will be held on March 28th and 29th, 2007 at the UVU Sorensen Student Center on the Orem campus from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. The keynote speakers for this year's event are Chris Crutcher, author of Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes and Whaletalk and Brett Helquist, illustrator for A Series of Unfortunate Events.  Crutcher will speak on hot topics of the day including censorship and bad language in books. Helquist will discuss the creative process of illustration and character design. Joy Neaves, editor for Front Street Books, will speak on writing and reading for young readers and will discuss issues related to publishing with a small house.

Three exciting new workshops are offered for the first time for the authors attending the conference: Peer Critiques, First Pages Critique/Workshop, and Professional Critiques. Peer Critique is an opportunity for aspiring writers to share their work with each other and give and receive honest feedback. First Pages Critiques/Workshop allows writers the chance to turn in their first page of their work to an experienced writer for free critiquing and then attend a workshop session giving advice and tips. Professional Critiques are offered for an additional fee and is a great opportunity for writers to have their first 10 pages read and critiqued by a professional.

The forum will help inspire teachers, writers, illustrators and librarians to encourage quality reading with workshops designed by both local and national top children's literature advocates.

Registration is $159 for both days which includes discounts on book purchases, lunch on Thursday, and a $3.00 meal ticket each day to use for breakfast, snacks, or lunch.  For more information or to register for the Forum on Children's Literature, visit   or call 801-863-8894.
