WebCT Quizzes & Respondus

If you already have quizzes in your WebCT course you can use Respondus to download those quiz questions as a Respondus project and then convert that Respondus project to a plain text file in the Respondus Standard Format.


Download WebCT Quiz/Survey Questions with Respondus

You can download existing WebCT Quizzes or Surveys with Respondus which can then be edited in Respondus and uploaded back into WebCT.

  1. Click the Retrieval & Reports tab (Figure 1-1).

  2. Click the Retrieve Questions button in the left-hand column.
  3. In step 1 of the Respondus Retrieval process you must choose a WebCT server. If you haven't already specified your WebCT server, choose -add new server- from the drop-down menu (Figure 1-2).

    1. In the WebCT Server Information window type in your WebCT server address.
    2. Name the server for your own reference.
    3. Enter your WebCT ID and password.
    4. Be sure you have the Server Port set correctly. If you do not know what port WebCT is running on contact your WebCT Administrator.
    5. Click OK to proceed (Figure 1-3).

  4. Step 2 of the Respondus Retrieval process asks you to choose your course. If you do not see your courses in the drop-down menu, check your WebCT Server information.
  5. In step 3 of the Respondus Retrieval process you can select a Quiz or Survey to download or you can choose a Category. All questions within the Quiz, Survey, or question Category will be downloaded to your Respondus Projects folder.
  6. Step 4 of the Respondus Retrieval process lets you name the new file which will be saved as a Respondus file on your local computer's hard drive.
  7. Click Retrieve to download the questions from WebCT (Figure 1-4).

Convert a Respondus Project to a TXT File

You can convert existing Respondus Project files from their proprietary file format to a plain text file in the Respondus Standard Format to be used in other applications. We start inside the Respondus application.

  1. Inside the Start tab under Open or Create click the Open button (Figure 2-1).

  2. Find your Respondus project file and click Open to proceed.
  3. Now click the Preview & Publish tab (Figure 2-2).

  4. Click the Print Options button in the left-hand column.
  5. In step 1 of the Respondus Print Options process you must select the Exam with Answer Key option
  6. Clicking the Settings button allows you to adjust the way questions and answers will be displayed (Figure 2-3).

    This is an important option to check if you want data such as question feedback to be included. Click OK when ready.
  7. In step 2 of the Respondus Print Options process you may choose to have headers appear at the top of each page; however, it is not necessary and should be avoided if you intend to use your .txt file in other applications like the Play Station @ UVU.
  8. Step 3 of the Respondus Print Options process allows you to indicate other options such as the randomization of question order, or selection of just a select few questions.
  9. When you are ready to export your data click the Save to File button at the bottom of the window (Figure 2-4).

  10. In the Save to File window you may name your file and choose a location on your local hard drive to save the quiz data. You may also change the file type from Microsoft Word file (.doc) to Plain Text file (.txt) (Figure 2-5).

  11. Click Save to finish and OK to complete.

You now have a copy of your Quiz or Survey as a .txt file in a Respondus-compatible format.
