ESL Student Outcomes

The English as a Second Language progam support the following of the UVSC Mission:
We are dedicated to providing a broad range of quality academic, and social opportunities which are designed to encourage students to attain their goals personally and professionally and to realize their full talents and potential. The program is committed ESL instruction which meets the needs for personal enrichment and career enhancement for international and non-English speaking resident students, while contributing to the diversity of the college and the community.
Outcomes assessments are methods of measuring how effective the instruction for a given class or program is. This information shows that the teaching in the ESL Program is very effective. It measures how well the students of Level IV were able to meet the intended student outcomes as described below.
 
Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
 
  • Students should be able to understand most spoken English; in particular, they should be able to understand, follow, and take notes on academic lectures.

  • Students should be able to conduct effective oral communication in English with few major distractions caused by poor pronunciation.

  • Students should have the vocabulary and reading skills necessary to advance at least to School of General Academics reading courses.

  • Students should be able to write well organized essays clearly expressing their ideas and opinions in a variety of rhetorical forms.
