The English Conversation Club |
| The English Conversation club has a three-fold mission: 1) to familiarize ESL students with the American culture, and to help integrate them into the UVSC community by building friendships with UVSC student volunteers 2) to help ESL students improve their SPOKEN English and 3) to assist American students in learning foreign languages. |
How does the program work?
At the beginning of the semester, ESL students will be paired up with American UVSC student volunteers. Both ESL and American partners will have a chance to meet each other at one of the English Conversation Club meetings.
How often and when should we meet?
The ESL student and UVSC volunteer should meet once a week for at least one hour for the rest of the semester. You decide exactly when and where. Plan a time convenient for both of you to meet and complete the various activities your teacher gives you every week. The ESL students will be required to hand in the weekly assignments every FRIDAY (Level's 1&2) and MONDAY (Levels 3&4).
What if I can't meet?
If, for some reason, you are sick/go on vacation/ etc. and are unable to make your appointment, call your partner up or e-mail him/her and reschedule for a different time.
What if my partner wants to practice speaking Japanese/ Spanish/ Chinese/ Portuguese/ Russian/ Korean etc. with me?
We will try to pair American students who are studying a foreign language with an ESL student who speaks that same language so the program can mutually beneficial. Once you have finished speaking English, you can switch into your native language and help your partner learn your language. You should, however, speak English FIRST.
What if my partner doesn't show up?
If your partner doesn't show up, try calling him/her. If that doesn't work, tell your teacher and we will try to work things out. Sometimes people meet at the wrong place or at the wrong time due to miscommunication problems. Try writing down exactly when and where you will meet to clear up any misunderstandings. If you are still having problems, we will find you a new partner.
Why should I participate in the program?
It is required, but it is also a great opportunity for you to make an American friend and practice speaking English!
