Listening
 
Before you start:
  • There are many different types of media on the Internet. Windows Media�, RealMedia�, and Quicktime�. Be sure you have access to these players from home or a computer lab. Many of these files will not play unless you use the correct player.
  • Try to determine what connection speed you will need to hear and see the media files for these sites. Remember that a media file that downloads and plays well with high-speed connections will take a long time to download and view at slow connections.
  • Many of these sites have been created without language learners specifically in mind so they will require the support of a teacher or specific assignments.
 
National Public Radio Advanced. Current News and program archives back to 1996, message boards to leave comments about current event topics. Transcripts available for purchase.
Voice of America Advanced. Current news from around the world, availabe in RealAudio format with transcripts.
BBC World Service Advanced. Audio and transcripts of international news and information in British English are together. This site designed with language learners in mind. Key vocabulary is provided with definitions.
Online Newshour Advanced. Part of PBS that has audio recordings.
Learning Resources Intermediate to Advanced. The Learning Resources site offers web-delivered instruction using current and past CNN San Francisco bureau news stories.
The English Listening Lounge Beginning to Advanced. Learn English by listening. Study anytime, any place. It's easy, and it's fun. Listen to real people speaking real English. Your English will improve quickly.
Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab Advanced: Audio in RealMedia format. Self-study guide has activities sorted by topic.
ESL Independent Study Lab Beginning to Intermediate. Contains over 225 of the best Internet resources for ESL/EFL students! All Web sites are clearly annotated. Organization is by skill area and language level.
