Before You Come:
UVSC is located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Hills and canyons create opportunity for fun day-hikes, mountain biking, and rock climbing adventures. Students can also enjoy water recreation at Utah Lake as well as fly fishing on the Provo River. Utah is famous for its winter snow season and provides perfect powder for winter sports.
Along with to outdoor sports, Utah Valley is also rich in culture and the arts. There are many local venues for theater, music, artistic, and dance performances.
In addition to the wonderful opportunities for recreation and entertainment one can find in Utah and in Utah Valley, there is a lot of information students need before they come.
What to Bring When You Come
- The climate in Orem is generally mild. Central Utah is a semi-arid part of the Great Basin Desert. The Orem/Provo area is nestled against the Wasatch Mountains. It is dry and hot in the summer, cold and snowy in the winter. You will need a warm jacket and warm boots or footwear in the winter. Clothing in the winter needs to be layered. This is to say that you can add or take off clothing as the environment dictates. You can bring them or buy them here. Many students prefer to buy these things after they arrive because it's more convenient for them. The prices of these items in the U.S. may also be lower than in some other countries.
- Casual clothing is OK for class. Many students wear jeans. Again, you may want to buy most of your clothing after you arrive.
- Appliances such as hair dryers and curlers, shavers, CD or MP3 players, and computers run on 110 Volts. Appliances from other countries often have different plug/socket configurations and voltage requirements. Check before you come.
- There are occasions during the year when international students have an opportunity to wear the traditional clothing of their countries. You may want to bring one such outfit.
- Bring enough money (about $750.00) in traveller's checks to cover the first couple of week's expenses for lodging, meals, housing deposit, etc. Please do not bring a large quantity of cash.
- If you plan to drive a car while you are staying in the U.S., you should get an International Driver's License. You can use the International Driver's License to drive in Utah for several months. Then, you will need to get a Utah Driver's License.
