CASE STUDY - HEATING SYSTEM

John is a professional in Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning; and as such he knows about technical matters. John is approached by an administrator at the college, where he teaches, to come and look at the air-conditioning system in the condominium where he lives. The condominium is a year and a half old and last summer the air-conditioning ran 24 hours a day and did not adequately cool and was very expensive to operate.

The administrator believes that the equipment is under-sized and has tired to get the installing contractor to put in a larger system but the contractor assures him that the system is the right size and that he has not intention of changing it.

After further questioning, John finds out that the contractor is a very good personal friend of his and also one of his former students. John is being pressured by the administrator to come out and do a heat gain calculation on his condominium and leave him a written copy to "prove" his case with the air conditioning contractor.

  1. Should John do what is asked by this administrator?
  2. Should John jeopardize his friendship with the contractor to protect his job?
  3. Should John refer the matter to another third party contractor who has n no vested interest in the matter?
  1. What other alternatives are available?
