CASE STUDY - PRINTING PRESS
Charles was hired to work in the printing operation of the local college. He was hired to run a printing press and help with other production needs. Charles had very little experience running the press, but he was still the most qualified applicant at the time of hiring. If he had been hired by a printing company in the local community, he would have been making at least $2.00 more per hour than his current rate. The pay system at the college does not allow for anything other than yearly raises and never will be competitive with the local industries.
Charles has learned his responsibilities enough to get by, but is not very motivated to get "good" and really contribute. He also has no plans to stay with the printing organization at the college as a long term employee, but he likes being able to take free classes, which is part of the benefit package for an employee. After six months, the formal evaluation was conducted. Charles' supervisor, Fred, expressed his concern about the lack of motivation and the "get by" attitude. Charles comment is, "at the rate I am paid, you are getting more than your money's worth."
