CASE STUDY - SAWYER ASSOCIATES

Sawyer Associates was hiring a significant number of new employees, which had put a real strain on the personnel department. This department was responsible to verify all resume' materials received by applicants. After final interviews, Jackie was hired as the new office technician. It was noticed that she asked lots of questions about software procedures that her resume' indicated proficiency in using. It was also noticed that Jackie learned quickly and didn't ask the same question more than once. Jackie was a very dedicated, hard working employee and was performing her job well, but she still continued to ask lots of questions.

Amanda, her supervisor, had a monthly evaluation with Jackie and talked with her about "all these questions'. As they talked, Amanda challenged Jackie and Jackie admitted that she had lied with the information on her resume'. There were several software programs that she had no experience with but had indicate experience other paper work. Jackie's performance had proven that she learned quickly and was a good worker. What should Amanda do? What are her options?

  1. Should Jackie be fired on the spot for being dishonest?
  2. Because she has proven to be a good worker, should the incident be overlooked and kept as information between Amanda and Jackie?
  3. If a reprimand is in order, to what extent?
  4. Are there other choices for Amanda?
