Joe is a teacher at a community college and has taught for 20 years in both high school and college situations in which he has observed a fairly wide range of student behavior. Currently in his college class of 54 students are a male and female student who always sit on the very back row and often (almost every class period) rub and kiss each other during the lecture. Sometimes this activity goes on for 10-15 minutes without ever opening their eyes.
Although this behavior is agonizingly annoying to the instructor and offensive to some students, for the most part the couple is ignored.
Questions: (Which do you most closely agree with? Why?)
Does the instructor have a right or obligation to intervene in the behavior?
Should he do nothing?
Talk to the students, asking them to refrain (What would you do if they continue anyway?)
Demand that the students stop, "this is not a class in love-making, pay attention to the lecture!" they stop but only briefly, and then continue.
Stop the lecture, waiting for the students to quit their love-making, hoping to embarrass them.
Notify the students that the behavior is unacceptable.
Notify security and ask that they be removed.
