Case Study: Software Sharing
by Eldon H. Greenhalgh
Cabinetry and Architectural Woodwork

Within the cabinet making program, computer programs are used for kitchen layout and design. Three programs are needed on a computer for this design process to work properly.

Jim, one of our former students, purchased his own computer for designing kitchens for his clients. Jim ran into a problem. He was only able to purchase two of three programs, "A" and "B".

Jim knew I had the program "C" on my computer, so he came to me for help. After talking to him for awhile, the following information came to light:

I own a copy of the necessary software. Jim wants a copy of Program "C" so that he will be able to design and layout kitchens.

Questions:

Would it be ethical to share the program with him since it is out of print?

Should I just let him come over and use my computer when he needs the program?

If I let him copy program "C", should I charge him?
