Case Study: Advice from an Oldtimer

Richard has just graduated from State Teacher's college and will be starting his first teaching job at Inner City Junior High School. The student body there is composed primarily of Latino teens.

Before school started, Richard was invited to a social given by the teachers union. While at the social, he was approached by an "oldtimer" at the school who gave him a personal orientation. This orientation focused on the oldtimer's view that Latinos have no interest in or ability to profit from an education. He further stated that they are lazy, and should not be trusted. Other faculty members are listening to the monologue, and add their own strong views about the Latino students at "Wetback Tech."

Questions:

Should Richard confront them?

Should he agree with them, to "fit in"?

Should Richard report them to the administration?

Should he just ignore them?
