Case Study: The Infant Vegetarian

by Ed Jones

Humanities/Philosophy

Mary Sue and Billy Bob have a very young daughter named Cindy Lou. Mary Sue is a vegetarian and desires that Cindy Lou also be raised a vegetarian. Although Billy Bob is not a vegetation, he is very respectful of Mary Sue's wishes with regard to Cindy Lou's upbringing. However, Billy Bob's parents (both happy carnivores) view a vegetarian lifestyle as unhealthy, immoral and downright unAmerican.

One day, Billy Bob discovers that his parents have secretly been feeding Big Macs to Cindy Lou. Billy Bob is shocked. He is also worried about how Mary Sue will react when she hears of this occurrence. When he confronts his parents about this matter, Billy Bob's mother suggests that he simply conceal this incident from Mary Sue.

Questions:

What moral issues are involved in this situation?

What are Billy Bob's options?

What should Billy Bob do?
