Case Study: Community Service

Air Conditioning and

Refrigeration Technology

I am a refrigeration and air conditioning specialist, and have spent a number of years learning about my field and developing skills as a professional. I am called upon periodically by local church leaders to repair refrigerators or other appliances for church members who cannot afford to hire someone at normal service rates. The church leader tells me to do the repairs and submit a bill to the church for payment.

My normal hourly rate is $35.00 per hour, and if a part costs me $10.00 I normally sell it for $20.00. These repairs are often complicated and take a long time to complete. Also, they usually do require replacement of parts.

Questions:

Should I charge my normal labor rate and markup on parts?

Should I donate the labor and charge for parts at the normal rate?

Should I donate everything?
