Excused: President Romesburg, Joe Strange

Guests: Linda Makin

Call to order: Ron called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.

Presentation of 12/11/01 meeting minutes: Minutes were presented and accepted with no changes.

Report from Dr. Stoddard: Dr. Stoddard let the faculty senate know that the calendar will be amended so faculty will have the same days off as UEA (Utah Education Association). She also stated that if any faculty members are interested in early retirement, they will need to talk to their dean. Early retirement will now be negotiated on an individual basis.

Report from Linda Makin (for President Romesburg): Linda went over the status of USHE (Utah State Higher Education) Funding. The following will take place: 1) program elimination - professional driving, 2) salary reduction of 0.5% for all salaried employees and a salary freeze, 3) reduction of 16 FTE faculty/staff (equivalent to 1/3 of FY 02 new positions), 4) hiring freeze impacting key programs and services, and 5) postponement of institutional projects and purchases (reducing contingency). She wanted to put some rumors to rest: there will not be 20,000 layoffs (since UVSC doesn=t even employ that many people...), and there will be a merit/bonus of 1 2 %.

She re-emphasized that enrollment growth has not been funded. There are talks of tuition increases between 12 - 15%.

Information Items:

Meeting dates - Ron gave the senators a handout with the dates of the spring semester senate meetings.

Presentation by Ann Shively - Ron reminded the senators that Ann Shively will be speaking about her two weeks as a therapist at Ground Zero WTC on Thursday, January 17th at noon in the Activity Center.

Faculty Merit Bonus Process - Eldon Greenhalgh said that dean=s now have the applications for merit/bonus. The deadline is February 7th.

Discussion of benefits process - John Balden reported that UVSC is in a better negotiating position for medical benefits since less money has gone out on claims. He said that costs will continue to go up, but not as much.

Post-tenure review - Karin Davidson asked senators to type up their suggested changes so that they can be easily referred to and implemented. She said senators can e-mail them to her or bring them to her. The January 29th senate meeting primarily will focus on the post-tenure review policy.

Lab fees - Mike Shively told the senators that there is some discussion going on about the possibility of having a standard lab fee that every UVSC student will have to pay. There was concern among the senators about the fairness of this, as well as how it would be disclosed to the students. The senators will take this discussion to their faculty and be prepared to share their findings with the senate.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night - LeeAnn told the faculty that they can still get their vouchers for the game. There will be a table set up on Wednesday across from the bookstore from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The senators can also pick up tickets after the meeting.

Adjournment of meeting: A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
