Ken White received his M.A. in Japanese in 1986 and his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies in 1998, both from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He has taught language, literature, philosophy and Eastern religion courses at Beloit College, Gustavus Adolphus College, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, Brigham Young University, and UVSC. He currently teaches courses in the Philosophy department and the Integrated Studies department.
In December 2005 he published his first book outlining the evolution of Buddhist enlightenment philosophy from its Indian origins to its application in Japanese Shingon ritual as formulated by the Heian Buddhist leader, Kūkai (774-835 C.E.). He has produced a number of translations of early Buddhist texts treating enlightenment theory as it evolved out of the Indian context and was further developed in the context of Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. Ken is currently working on a translation and commentary of a fourteenth century work entitled, The History of the Transmission of the Buddha-Dharma from India to China to Japan by the monk, Gyōnen.
When not teaching, Ken enjoys spending time with his family, riding his Harley, and enjoying the outdoors.
