Laurelyn Whitt

Laurelyn Whitt currently holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Philosophy and of Integrated Studies at UVSC.  She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science from the University of Western Ontario. Before joining UVSC's faculty in 2004, she taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Southern Methodist University and Michigan Technological University.  The recipient of a Howard Foundation Fellowship in 2000-2001, she has also received fellowships to pursue research at the Australian National University and the University of Auckland. Her work covers a wide range of areas, notably science studies, legal studies and indigenous studies, and is interdisciplinary in nature.

She has published articles in Studies in the History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Science, Science as Culture,  Cultural Studies, The American Indian Culture and Research Journal, New York University Review of Law and Social Change, Queen's Law Journal, and theEncyclopedia of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine in Non-Western Cultures, among others. Her most recent book, The Strange Fruit of American Justice: International and Domestic Resistance to the Death Penalty, co-authored with Alan Clarke, was published by the University Press of New England in 2007.

She has also published poetry in various journals in the United States, Canada and New Zealand, including The Tampa Review,Puerto Del Sol,  The Spoon River Poetry Review, The Malahat Review, Wisconsin Review, Hawai'i Review,PRISM International, and Poetry Canada Review. Her manuscript, Interstices, won the Holland Prize and was published by Logan House Press in 2006. She is also the author of two award-winning poetry chapbooks: Words For Relocation (Will Hall Press) and a long dream of difference (Frith Press), both published in 2001.
