Circulation Policies
UVSC Fire Science Library Circulation Policy
Revised: October 2000
Mission Statement:
The mission of the UVSC Fire Science Library is to collect, organize and house printed and non-printed materials to support the instructional goals of the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy and its publics, as well as to the UVSC library patrons, which includes faculty, staff, students, community patrons and members of the Utah Academic Library Consortium.
I. General Guidelines.
A. Various non-circulating items such as reference books and magazines may be checked out by faculty. The lending period will be decided at the time of checkout and will depend upon the needs of the faculty member and the demand of the item.
B. Fines for late items will not be waived for faculty members. Faculty members will also be responsible for paying fines on lost or damaged items.
C. In accordance with the ALA Librarians' Code of Ethics, the UVSC library will "protect each user's right to privacy with respect to information sought or received and materials consulted, borrowed, or acquired," meaning circulation information will not be divulged.
D. Special circulation requirements may be needed for Fire Science agencies. Such decisions will be made by the Fire Science Library case by case and will consider the need of the patron vs. the demand of the item/s.
II. Books.
A. General Collection.
The lending period for books is two weeks for students and four weeks for faculty and staff. Books can be renewed twice; once if the books are present and once if the books are not present. There is no limit of books per patron. Late fees per book are as follows:
7 day grace period
8th day -- $2.00
9+ days -- $.25 per day
Maximum fine per book-- $5.00
B. Reference Books.
Books with classification numbers designated REF (reference) do not circulate.
III. Audio cassettes, Music CDs, and CD-Roms
The lending period for audio cassettes, music CD's and CD-Rom's is two weeks. They may be renewed twice: once if the item(s) are present and once if the item(s) are not present. There is no limit on these items. Audio cassettes, music CDs, and CD-Rom's must be returned to the Reserve/Media Desk to avoid additional fines. Late fees per item are as follows:

Maximum fine per item-- $5.00
IV. Videocassettes.
Three videos per patron may be checked out at one time. All videos must be returned to the Reserve/Media Desk to avoid additional fines.
A. Library Videos.
Library videocassettes checkout for three days. These videos may be renewed one time. Late fees per video are as follows:
1 day grace period
2+ days -- $1.00 per day
Maximum fine per video-- $25.00
V. Reserve.
Reserve items circulate as requested by individual faculty members. Fines for each reserve item are $2.00 per hour. Faculty members placing photocopied materials on reserve must abide by the copyright rules (see Photocopies, Copyright Law and Library Reserve Guidelines).
VI. Serials.
Serials do not circulate to students. The following rules apply to faculty and staff periodical checkout:
1. Bound periodicals do not circulate to faculty or staff.
2. Faculty and staff may check out current periodicals for 48 hours.
VII. Interlibrary Loan.
Materials that are unavailable from the UVSC Library can be obtained from other city, state and national libraries through Interlibrary Loan (see Interlibrary Loan Policy). Only members of the UVSC population (UVSC students, faculty and staff)are eligible for ILL service.
VIII. Community Patron Library Cards.
A community patron library card is available for $20.00 per year. Patron card holders are eligible for all circulation privileges within the UVSC library, with exclusion of the Interlibrary Loan service, Reserve material, and Distance Learning videos.
IX. Lost or Damaged Books.
A book will be declared lost after it is missing for 30 days. The patron will be responsible for paying the replacement cost of a lost book plus a $10.00 processing fee. The cost of a damaged item will be assessed at the time the item is turned in.
