I was told that to reserve a study room you had to do it online. The problem is that the only rooms available to reserve are for faculty. If there is a way to reserve online, rooms 419-422, please make it easier to find on the webpage. We are sorry for the confusion on scheduling group study rooms. We have purchased software to reserve library rooms, but technical issues were not allowing it to work smoothly for the group study rooms. Currently, our instruction labs are the rooms you are seeing that can only be reserved by faculty. We hope to have the issues resolved soon. In the meantime, we will be happy to reserve group study rooms for you at the circulation desk (863-8886).

Please install Corell Word Perfect on the computers, because I cannot open my flash drive documents on Microsoft Word because they were created with Word Perfect.
Thank you for your suggestion. We had originally loaded WordPerfect on only one computer because of licensing issues. We did not have a site license for computers across campus and needed to purchase individual licenses. Since we were unsure of how many WordPerfect users were on campus, we only purchased one license to determine the demand.
After your suggestion, we discovered that campus had very recently purchased a site license for WordPerfect. We will now be adding it to all of our computers in the near future.

Is it possible to renew library items on the internet? Can it be fixed? I always get this message when I try to renew:
uPortal Error
Sorry, but uPortal encountered an error that is preventing it from rendering. The error must be corrected by system administrators. Try again later
We are sorry you are having problems renewing materials online. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing problems with the My Account feature and are working with the software manufacturer to resolve the issue. In the meantime, feel free to renew items over the telephone by calling our circulation desk at (801) 863-8886.

Need a book to show pH of fruits and vegetables like the Jamlady Cookbook or some other.
Thank you for your suggestion. We will be ordering The Jamlady Cookbook as per your request.

Why does the library search engine always seem to be down?
We are assuming this is referring to the library's online catalog. For the past few months, we have experienced intermittent problems with the catalog. Unfortunately, the cause of the problem has not been identified, and we continue to work with the software manufacture for a resolution. On July 3, the software will be upgraded, and we hope this will improve stability.

I would like to congratulate you because of the people that you have helping us. The guys and the ladies are very helpful and nice. The whole school should follow your example of good costumer service. I enjoy coming to the library because is a place that makes me feel like what I am paying for my education at this institution is worth it. Thank you for such a great job.
We appreciate your comment! We constantly try to find ways to improve our best customer service, and we are glad you have had good experiences.

Add a FAQ about how and where staff can obtain a library card. I have no desire to wander all over campus in vain. Thank you!
Thank you for the suggestion. We have added this information to our Services for Faculty page as well as our FAQ page.

Is it possible to crack down on the cell phone talking near the computer areas! i have never once done research without some chump talking on their cell phone right next to me! it's out of control. thank you very much:)
We are exploring several options now to accommodate quiet computing. Hopefully, we will have a solution sometime soon.

I am pleased to see the display in honor of up and coming Constitution Day. It is nice to have a Library that is so involved and alerts the students of events on campus and in general. I am proud to have such a great Campus Library. However, despite my excitement in the advocacy of Constitution Day I was bothered by the display of our Nations Flag. It is a symbol of our country and our freedoms, and should be treated within the guidelines which are included in the Flag Code. The Flag was draped over the table and since moved to the top of the display cabinet. Here is an excerpt from the flag rules and regulations on displaying a flag. May I suggest finding another way to display the flag with proper respect; perhaps from the wall or a free standing staff?
"When the flag is displayed in a manner other than by being flown from a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, that is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. When festoons, rosettes or drapings are desired, bunting of blue, white and red should be used, but never the flag" (http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html#1)
Thank you
Thank you for the reminder. We will keep this in mind for future displays when we include a flag.

I am new at UVSC and I'm not sure which building the library is located in. Could this be added to your website somewhere? Thanks.
Thank you for the suggestion. We have added this information to the Get Help and Contact Us pages.

What happened to the website? It's a good thing I already knew my way around the old one or I would be totally confused with all the extra garbage on the screen. Can't UVSC just be a bit more consistant for a while. -at least until I get graduated so I don't have to constantly be relearning all the different sites.
Thank you for your input. We are sorry if this has inconvenienced you, but in the long run, we think this will have some positive changes for you.
Our old web site had been in place for the past five years, and many people were comfortable using it. However, the web site used old technology that did not meet accessibility requirements and was often difficult to maintain. In addition, UVSC has purchased a new system to manage all of the web pages on campus, and we felt moving into the new system during the summer semester would be less disruptive than during a regular semester since there are fewer students on campus. You will see all of the other departmental web pages on campus moving into this new consistent look and feel during this coming school year.
The new system will provide a number of advantages for users. It will allow for further integration with UVLink as well as the information will be more current because it is easier to update. Also, the home page will hopefully help you get to the information you need quicker because we have identified those items from our old site that were used most often by students.
We hope the new web site will quickly become just as comfortable to you as our old web site. If you have questions about where to locate something, please feel free to contact the reference desk at (801) 863-8840.

The dropdown menus on the old library website were very helpful; I suggest you use them on the new site.
Thank you for your input. Although the fly out navigation from our old site may have helped many users navigate quickly, they do not meet accessibility standards, and we are trying to make are web site accessible to all users. Our goal for the new site is to create navigation that will direct users to their desired destination quickly through the links on the homepage and the navigation on the top and left. If you have any other suggestions for making this navigation more user friendly, we welcome the input!

Make the search engines easier to find.

Nice look. But the home page would be much more convenient if all the major routes (including ILL, tutorials, my account) were visible without having to scroll down.
Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. To make the search engines more visible, we have added a link to the left navigation when you click on the Books & Media or Article tabs. Hopefully, this will make locating them more convenient for you.
UPDATE: We have also added a Google search box and a link to other popular search engines on the lower right corner of the Library's home page. You can now enter your search terms in the search box and be connected to Google for a list of results.
Having all of the major links appearing on our home page without scrolling is a bit more problematic. We will shrink the size of the images to help minimize the space required for each link. However, some of this is out of our control since each computer accessing the web page may have a wide range of resolution settings or window sizes. What may appear on one monitor without scrolling will display entirely different on another monitor. Unfortunately, this may mean you will need to continue scrolling some, but hopefully the changes will minimize the amount of scrolling you need to do.

Do you have a drop box to return library materials? If not, I think students would find that helpful.
We do have a drop box in parking lot K between the library and the CS building for both books and audiovisual materials. Thanks for the suggestion and let me know if you have any questions!

I'm taking advantage of the 4 year behavior science program, at least I thought I was taking advantage. How come UVSC does not have a library that supports such a program. At the bare minimum I would like to see the library open more. None of this closed at 7pm on friday and closed 5pm on Sat. I'm not a traditional student, I work. Saturday night is the best time for me to pull sources and research. I find it funny that my home town library is open till 9pm on both days, why can't UVSC.
I'm so frustrated about the lack this library has to offer, that I'm thinking about writing my legislature. My complaint is why should the school get funding for programs it can't support. The hours is just the top of the problem. UVSC does not have the media (books and journals) to support a large town library, let a lone a "University". This problem needs to be addressed before any more 4 year programs can even be thought of, let a lone implemented

I am really disappointed with the hours of the library. Most college libraries stay open until at least midnight or later. I can't believe you close so early on Saturdays and was astonished to find that you are not even open on Sunday.
I am also upset with the noise level in the library. I have never been in a library that was also used as a hall way too. I can't believe students will talk at a normal level in the library. I really would like to see that the library be a more quiet place and the hours be extended.
Thanks for your email. The problem of what hours to offer continues to be discussed. BYU, Utah State, and Weber are currently open until midnight through the week. UU, SUU, and UVSC stay open until 11:00.
All the public higher education schools close Friday and Saturday evenings. Only BYU currently stays open. Perhaps we could discuss staying open a little later on Saturday evenings.
Essentially, the discussion is a cost/benefit discussion. As you are probably aware, UVSC is terribly underfunded when compared to the other Utah universities. It costs about $100/hour for utilities (on Sunday, you have to add an additional four hours to bring up the HVAC system, meaning that opening six hours on Sunday would cost $1000 per day in heating/air conditioning costs). Then, you would have to add personnel salary costs on top of that. Obviously, additional hours on Friday and Saturday would be more manageable.
At one time (before we made budget cuts in 2001), we experimented with Sunday hours for about a year and a half. We experienced very poor use of the library on Sundays, averaging about 20 people.
We do stay open until midnight all week every semester for the last two weeks before finals starting April 11. Hopefully this is some help.
Due to the addition of the new CS building and the attached hallway, the noise level is difficult to control. A new library remains the top building priority for the college, and the additional space will accommodate more quiet study areas. In the interim, we have tried to address the complaints about the noise level by creating a quiet study room in LC 411.

You should post "myaccount" to the front library webpage
Thanks for the suggestion! We are in the middle of redesigning our web site and "My Account" will be an option from the homepage, possibly under the heading "Renew Books and Videos" or something similar (let us know if you have ideas on the wording). The new web site is currently scheduled to be unveiled this summer.

The UVSC library calendar is very helpful! The hours don't have am/pm posted, so it remains unclear as to when it will really be open. Even a minor mending means more.
Great idea! We have updated our calendars to now include am or pm with the hours.

This is a great DVD set I think the library should carry. http://www.cambridgeeducational.com/Cambridge_Home/Item.cfm/8/2970. You have "The Addicted Brain but it's in such bad shap it's really hard to listen to. There is so much static.
Thanks for letting us know about the Addicted Brain. This series would be a wonderful addition to our collection, and we're working on getting them. We'll let you know when they come in.

The library computers could use word perfect. I'm not sure if that's possible, but it would be nice for the students.
Thanks, Amy
It would be really helpfull to have the adobe suite on the computers. i often need illustrator or photoshop and am unable to do projects because of inexcessibilty. They are available in the GT mac labs but you can only use them if you are taking a class. i have taken classes but since i am no longer taking classes i am unable to use them. I think that having the adobe suite on the computers would be a great benifit to all students. Thanks
I think we need a CD burner on the work station with the scanner. Scanned files can get too big for a floppy disk and some students can't afford flash drives. CDs are not too expensive and are widely used among the student population.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! We will use these suggestions as we continue to build our new information commons.
