NLM Gateway

This site is an entry point for searching the resources at the National Library of Medicine.  It provides a global search function for PubMed, PubMed Central, and Medline Plus, all of which are included in this resource list.  This is an excellent starting point to begin a search of health-related government information.

This organization is one of the National Institutes of Health, and its mission is to support research in nursing in clinical and communities through grants and other funding programs.  It provides information on funding initiatives, including diversity programs and resources, links to nursing organizations, and publications from national meetings and conferences.

A National Library of Medicine service, Pubmed offers an index to more than 15 million citations from Medline for biomedical articles, including nursing, dating back to the 1950s.  It also links to the full text of articles and nongovernmental web resources.  A free, full-text collection of biomedical books is also available from the NCBI Bookshelf by choosing "Books" from the search box menu.

This site offers access to more than 160 full-text high-quality, open access life sciences journals from various publishers.

The CDC website provides information on specific health and safety topics, a public health image library, and state and national data sets on health and disease.  An A to Z index helps users find statistical and other information on specific conditions.

Healthfinder® is a Federal Web site for consumers, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services together with other Federal agencies.  Since 1997, Healthfinder® has been recognized as a key resource for finding the best government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet.  Healthfinder® links to select information and Web sites from over 1,500 health-related organizations.   

MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.

Merck & Co., Inc., one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, provides medical information in all of The Merck Manuals on a not-for-profit basis as a service to the community. The Merck Manual, The Merck Manual of Medical Information--Second Home Edition, The Merck Manual of Geriatrics, The Merck Manual of Health & Aging, and The Merck Veterinary Manual are available on this site.

This is another directory of consumer health information.  The site is organized by conditions, body systems, type of patient, etc.  It provides links to MedlinePlus and to specific institutes with NIH.

Utahealthnet is a consumer health web site containing Utah information on hospitals, health plans and long term care in Utah, Utah Go Local/Medline Plus for health and human services information by Utah Counties Utah Health Information Direct, delivering health related articles and book chapters directory to your desktop, and much more.

Non-Governmental Portals

The "MD" stands for "Meta Directory," and the University of Iowa's Hardin Library for the Health Sciences is one of the best and most complete directories for medical ad heal-related links.  This offers a huge, up-to-date collection of medical images and information, plus it is searchable by keyword of "subject clusters," such as AIDS, cancer, women's health, etc.

HealthWeb is a collaborative project of the health sciences libraries of the Greater Midwest Region (GMR) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and those of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation. Currently there are over twenty actively participating member libraries. This project is supported by the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

This web site from the Mayo Clinic includes high-quality and comprehensive health and medical information, plus it includes "tools," such as online calculators, self-assessments, a symptom checker, and quizzes.

Study Aids for Nursing Students

This includes pictures from the classic 1918 edition of Gray's Anatomy.  It also includes a subject index with 13,000 entries.

Ten systems can be explored:  skeletal, digestive, muscular, lymphatic, endocrine, nervous, cardiovascular, male or female reproductive, and urinary.  Search interactive graphics, including animations of the systems, tutorials and descriptions.

This resource is a multimedia tutorial featuring a virtual stethoscope to assess both respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.  Also included is a review of cardiac and pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology topics.

This University of Nebraska Medical Center portal provides evaluated, annotated links to online image collections in General, Anatomy and Histology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Embriology, Endoscopy, Neurology, Pathology, Pediatrics, and ENT.

Searchable by keyword or table of contents, The Merck Manual, 17th edition is available free on the web.

Created by the University of Florida Medical program, these guides include Vital Signs, Back and Extremity, Chest and Lung, Cardiology, Head and Neck, Eye, Abdominal, Breast, Pelvic, Neurologic, and Mental Status.

The highlight of this site is the "Careplan Corner" with nursing care plans under three categories:  "Altered/Alterations," Impaired/Impairment," and "General."  Nursing students can copy, save or print and modify any of the plans.  There is also a blank plan template to print out and fill in.  Other resource links for nurses and students are also available.

This resource provides drug lists that include the description, clinical pharmacology, indications and dosage, side effects and drug interactions, warnings and precautions, drug overdosage contraindications, and patient information.
