How to apply for a tutor position
Submit a Student Employment Application, through the Career and
Student Employment Job Board at www.uvsc.edu/csse. Priority will be
given to qualified work study applicants. Contact the Financial Aid office
to find out if you are eligible for work study. (The job numbers are: non-work
study - 4112, or work study - 4126.)
Submit to the Math Lab (LA 201) the following:
- Unofficial copy of transcripts that show your grades in the
- applicable courses.
- Two letters of recommendation from math instructors or a previous employer of a closely related position.
Take the tutor test in the Math Lab (LA 201). The test covers
Intermediate and College Algebra. Plan 1 - 2 hours for the test.
Once your application is complete it will be sent to the lab manager who
will schedule interviews when a tutor position opens.
Tutor Qualifications
- Grade of B or higher in College Algebra and one of the following
courses–Calculus I, Principles of Statistics I & II, Math for Elementary
Teachers I & II, Business Statistical Applications, or Physics for
Scientist/Engineer II
- Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills
- Knowledge of linear algebra, differential equations, abstract algebra
and/or numerical analysis is an asset, but not necessary
- Be sensitive to student difficulties with math
Tutor Responsibilities
- Tutoring drop-in students in math subjects--usually ranging from pre-algebra to calculus. Also: statistics, physics, differential equations, and linear algebra
- Reviewing course syllabi and preparing to help students in their math classes
- Helping to advertise the lab by visiting classes, creating posters, etc.
- Completing a minimum of one level of CRLA tutor training per year of employment
