Mediation Services
What is mediation?
Mediation is set up to assist two or more parties in finding resolve to conflicts through the use of a neutral third party. The third party facilitates discussion between the dissenting parties and helps them brainstorm solutions and find resolve to their dispute. Mediation is often a great alternative to formal action and provides all parties with a sense of ownership and resolve.
Advantages of Mediation:
- Provides better communication between dissenting parties.
- You decide on the solutions to your conflict as opposed to a judge or arbitrator imposing theirs.
- Mediation helps end problems, not relationships.
- Participants in mediation report higher satisfaction rates than people who go to court.
- Mediation is free for UVSC students.
The Mediation Process:
- Visit JADR in SC 107 and fill out the necessary "Mediation Request Form."
- You will also be asked to sign an "Agreement to Mediate Form."
- A time is set up, usually two hours in length, and confirmed by both parties to meet for mediation.
- Prior to the mediation session, both parties agree to abide by the set mediation rules.
- Following the mediation session, a detailed description of the agreement will be outlined and signed by both parties.
