Neither my brother nor my dad were surprised to hear that Aunt Bonnie is going to Africa next month as a Peace Corp volunteer.
First, she and the other members of the Kenya group gathers in Philadelphia for a few days of orientation.
Their focus at this point is to meet one another and get acquainted.
Then the whole group travels together to Nairobi, Kenya, where everyone will have their last chance for a hot shower.
After one night in Nairobi, half of them leaves for the town of Naivasha for eleven weeks of cultural sensitivity training.
Each of the volunteers gets to live with a Kenyan family during this period of training.
The close daily contact will help each volunteer learn Swahili, one of the languages spoken in Kenya.
Bonnie doesn't know exactly where in Kenya she will be posted.
She, as well as other members of her group, expect to be assigned to the area of greatest need.
No one in the group has been told their specific job assignment, but Bonnie says she will probably be helping Kenyans develop small businesses.
