Peer Tutoring -- About Us

What is Peer Tutoring?

Peer tutoring for non-math and non-English classes is available to UVU students FREE of charge. The program consists of several service components:

  • Drop-In Tutoring
Whether students need an occasional hint or a full explanation of difficult concepts, tutorial assistance is available on a drop-in basis. Tutors for many UVU courses are available in the Peer Tutoring Center, LA 201, Monday-Thursday from 9 am-6 pm and Friday from 9 am-3 pm; students can drop in at any time during those hours. The Peer Tutoring Center is also a great place to study!
  • One-on-One Tutoring
Students can sign up for one (1) hour a week of one-on-one tutoring with one of our tutors. This is a great opportunity to get some individualized tutoring--FREE! Check at the Academic Tutoring front desk for more information. You can also call 801-863-8310 to sign up.
  • Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instructon (SI) is offered for those courses considered high risk and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated sessions. SI leaders attend all class sessions, take notes, read all assigned material, and conduct three or more 50-minute SI sessions per week. SI sessions integrate how-to-learn with what-to-learn through collaborative learning techniques.
  • Online Peer Tutoring
Online Peer Tutoring (OPT) provides another choice for UVU students needing academic assistance. Students enrolled in Distance Education courses or who are unable to meet with a tutor on campus for live tutorials can log onto the Internet and interact with tutors and other students. The format uses an interactive white board so students and tutors can work problems and communicate in real time.
  • Who are the tutors?
Tutors are UVU students who have successfully completed the course(s) they are tutoring and have been recommended as tutors by their instructors. Tutors receive training in tutoring skills according to standards set by CRLA, the College Reading and Learning Association. Information about tutoring assistance may be obtained in the Peer Tutoring Center, LA 201 or by calling 801-863-8310.

Applications for Supplemental Instruction leaders and peer tutors are being accepted for the 2008-2009 academic year. Information is available on our employment web site, in LA 201, or at UVU Career and Employment Services, AD-111 or http://www.uvu.edu/csse/.
