The UVSC Humanities program is committed to the idea that humanities education forms the basis for every other academic discipline. The educated individual has a strong sense of the past, the present, and the future. Current job recruitment practices indicate that students with strong humanities backgrounds are advanced in their career preparation.

The discipline of humanities is the study of human intellectual and artistic creativity and what the resulting artistic forms reveal about the human experience. This field of study draws on other disciplines such as history, fine arts, literature, intellectual history, music, foreign languages, theology, and philosophy to see how the several artistic forms communicate and work together to give an in depth record of the meaning of human life in the past and present. The discipline also emphasizes the relationship between the arts, culture, and society.

These courses may be used to fulfill humanities requirements for Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Applied Science degrees. In addition to the requirements for the Humanities Distribution requirements, students may fulfill the Optional Requirements portion of the AA/AS degrees with a Humanities emphasis by completing 16 additional humanities credits.
