Ph.D., Department of Anthropology, University of California , San Diego (UCSD), 2001  

Dissertation (Good Intentions:  Women, Diet and Food Choice in America's "Finest" City) was an ethnographic study of food-related behavior, including eating, cooking and shopping habits, among 66 southern California women of different ages, ethnicities, and life circumstances.  

 

M.A., Department of Anthropology, UCSD, 1998 

Thesis explored issues in women’s health from an evolutionary perspective.  Included a cross-cultural comparison of reproduction and an investigation of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in women and nonhuman primates. 

 

B.A. [Anthropology], University Without Walls, Skidmore College , 1996 

Thesis traced the movement of Athabaskan peoples from Paleolithic Siberia to the modern American southwest using genetic, biological, linguistic, historical, literary, and mythological evidence.

Research Interests

The intersection of biology, culture, and environment with regard to health-related issues.  Past projects have addressed beliefs about cancer and their relationship to cancer prevention behaviors in , dietary choices, ethnicity and health-related behavior among American women, and the power of American children over household food consumption.
