The HASS Internship Program (HIP) promotes student engagement in practical and meaningful learning experiences. Coordinated
in conjunction with Career Services & Student Employment (CSSE), internships provide students with the opportunity to enhance
their educational experience and develop their skills and abilities.
Through internships, students apply the knowledge and theories of
the classroom to the workplace, gaining experience, self-esteem, and confidence. Internships also provide students with the opportunity
to make contacts and develop professional relationships on the local, national, and international level. In addition, internships contain an academic component.
The School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences awards academic credit for internships. Internship courses are approved at the departmental level, and are available
in many HASS departments during most semesters. Students must take an active role in arranging their internship, although Career Services & Student Employment and
the Faculty Sponsor can assist students throughout the process. In order to gain internship credit, the student must gain approval from the Faculty Sponsor in his/her
designated department, and the internship site must be related to the student's career goals and major. Many departments have established specific internship courses
with distinct prerequisite and academic requirements which may supersede
HIP procedures. All internships, however, must adhere to the general college policies governing internships.
Students who receive credit for an internship must establish
learning objectives with their Faculty Sponsor at the beginning of their internship and reflect on their learning through academic work (i.e. papers, journal, etc.). Students are required to submit
an evaluation of their experience at the end of the semester.
