Community Health Degrees and Programs

AA in Community Health
The Community Health program at UVSC provides support courses for General Education, the Elementary Education program, and the Integrated Studies program. The department is committed to provide course work that will enable students to complete an Associate in Science or Associate in Arts Degree with an emphasis in Community Health, and that can be transferred to other institutions.
Students planning to transfer to another institution, continuing with a Community Health major, should work closely with an advisor to assure appropriate courses and transferability of course work.

AS in Community Health

Community Health Integrated Studies
For those completing the Bachelor Degree in Integrated Studies (IS), many opportunities exist for advanced and professional degrees (law school, medical and dental schools, MBA, MPA, etc) and in the business environment. Many employers seek students with skills gained from liberal arts programs like Integrated Studies. These skills include the ability to comprehend diverse material, to write clearly, to think critically, to work cooperatively, and to become adept at problem solving.
The individualized nature of the Integrated Studies degree is attractive to students with multiple interests who want to develop skills that are relevant to a variety of careers. Students integrate course work in emphases such as science, business, health, literature, languages, communication, philosophy, behavioral science, social science and the arts. Emphases from computer science and information systems, accounting, technology and trades and physical education are also offered as part of this degree.

BS in Community Health, Health Services Administration
Health Care is a business, and like every other business endeavor good management keeps demand steady and overhead low. The occupation, medical and health services manager, encompasses all individuals who plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the delivery of health care.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, market demand for Health Service/Care Administrators is expected to grow faster (21-35%) than average through 2012, as the health services industry continues to expand and diversify. Opportunities will especially be good in offices of physicians, and other health care practitioners, home health care services and outpatient care centers. Medical and health service managers held some 244,000 jobs in 2002 according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This data indicates that 37% of those positions were in hospitals, 17% were employed in physician’s offices and nursing care facilities. The remaining 46% found positions in home health care services, Federal government health care facilities, ambulatory facilities run by State and local governments, outpatient care centers, insurance carriers, and community health care facilities for the elderly.
Median annual earnings, according to the Department of Labor, were $61,370.
Matriculation Requirements
For admission to the bachelor degree program, students must complete ZOOL 1090 and ENVT 2560 with a minimum C- grade, and must complete MGMT 2200 and MGMT 2240 with a minimum C grade.

BS in School Health Education
Graduates with a bachelor degree in Community Health can pursue a variety of career positions. Job titles include Health Education Specialist, Health Promotion Specialist, Health Program Evaluator, Health Services Administrators, etc. Graduates are qualified to work in governmental health agencies and in the private-sector in settings such as public health departments, health maintenance organizations, hospitals, clinics, and specialized health agencies such as the American Heart Association. An emphasis in School Health Education will prepare individuals to teach health in junior and senior high schools. The undergraduate major can additionally lead to advanced degrees in health education, hospital administration, public health administration, medicine and other health-related professions.
Students graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health with emphases in Community Health Education and School Health Education will be eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam offered through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Successful completion of a bachelor degree with these emphases and passing the exam entitles the student to become a Certified Health Education Specialist.

Minor in School Health Education
The Minor in School Health Education can be combined with other college wide Bachelor degrees. The minor provides students with a broad academic knowledge of foundational and scientific principles in this field of study.
