| Depression is a medical illness. People don't choose to be depressed, and it is not because you are weak or lazy. Depression affects 17 million people in the U.S. each year and is twice as common in women as in men. Symptoms of depression include:
The exact cause of depression is not known. It is known that chemical imbalances in the brain, along with genetic and life influences can be responsible for your moods.
