Top Ten FAQ's About UVU
When will university status take effect?
Answer: The legal name of the institution will remain Utah Valley State College until July 1, 2008, at which time it will become Utah Valley University.
When will UVU diplomas be issued and can I get one even if I already graduated?
Answer: University diplomas will be available beginning July 1, 2008. All graduates of UVSC (or UVCC, UTC, etc.) may contact the Alumni Association to have their diplomas reissued to reflect "Utah Valley University" after that date. Because of this, current students should not delay graduation.
Which master degrees will be offered and when will they be available?
Answer: The most likely master degrees will be in Education, Nursing and Business, based on the high demand for these degrees. The details and focus of these degrees are still being refined. A timeline has not yet been determined and will be established together with the Utah State Board of Regents. The soonest UVU's first master degree programs could be available would be fall semester 2008.
Will UVSC remain committed to its community college role?
Answer: Yes! In addition to select master degrees, UVU will continue to offer a wide variety of bachelor and associate degrees, as well as vocational certificates.We are committed to providing opportunity to all people at all levels. Like UVSC, UVU will have an open admissions policy with regard to its certificate, associate, and bachelor programs.
Will tuition go up as a result of university status?
Answer: Tuition rates increase slightly each year statewide. However, the State of Utah has specifically allocated $8 million annually to cover costs associated with university status. Tuition for graduate [master] level programs will be higher than that of undergraduate programs, as is the case statewide. Tuition is currently comparable to both SUU and Weber and will remain competitive with that of those institutions.
Will UVSC change its primary school colors or mascot when it becomes UVU?
Answer: A University Image Committee made up of UVSC faculty, staff, administration, students and alumni, as well as community members will address all image issues facing the institution as it transitions to university status, including logos, school colors, etc. UVSC will very much gauge the pulse of its constituents with regard to these issues. At this point, however, the only definitive decisions have been that UVU's primary color will remain green and the mascot and nickname will remain "Wolverines".
When will there be a Ph.D. program at UVU?
Answer: There are no plans to offer or seek any Ph.D. programs at UVU. The only institutions in the USHE system that offer doctorate degree programs are the University of Utah and Utah State University (Type I institutions, as defined by the state Board of Regents). UVU will be a Type II institution, which currently does not allow for doctoral degree programs. However, as is current practice, Utah State University may offer some doctoral degree programs at UVU facilities.
Along with master's programs, will there be any new bachelor degrees offered?
Answer: Yes, UVSC (UVU) will continue to expand its educational offerings of two- and four-year degree programs in addition to the added master's degrees.
Will you begin to offer more minors and majors as a result of switching to a University?
Answer: UVSC, and therefore UVU, will continue to expand educational offerings (adding two- and four-year degree programs as well as some master's degrees programs) to give students a comprehensive set of minors and majors to choose from. Academic Affairs manages a list of future degree programs according to demand and feasibility through the Regent approval process.
Are there any plans to start a football program?
Answer: Sorry, but there are not any plans to start a football team at this time...
