Payment of Benefits
Advance payment provides funds at the beginning of a school term to help the student meet expenses concentrated at the beginning of the term. Chapters 35 & 1607 are not eligible for advance pay.
An advanced payment is the 1st two months of your GI Bill benefits. The first month may be a partial month, with payment pro-rated for the number of days attended that month. Since VA normally pays after a month is completed, the student wouldn't receive another check until the end of the 3rd month.
Advance pay checks will be sent to the school, payable to the student. The Veteran will be notified by the UVSC Veterans Office that the check has been received at the UVSC Cashiers Office. Upon notification, the Veteran signs a release form in the UVSC Veterans Office then takes the form to Cashier Window to receive their check. The Veteran must be enrolled in at least 6 credits to receive their check. All other payments of the monthly benefit will be either directly deposited into your designated account or mailed to your current address on file at the VA Office.
Requesting Advance Pay
Students are eligible for advance payment when:
- Admitted to UVSC and lives in the local area, and
- UVSC Veterans Office receives the Request for Advance Payment form and
- UVSC Veterans Office receives the Veteran Class Schedule form, and
- The student is planning on enrolling in atleast half-time, and
- There are more than 30 days between terms and break pay will not be paid, and
- VA receives the advance payment request at least 45 days but not more than 120 days before the enrollment period.
Regular Payments
Payment for educational benefits is made monthly, upon completion of that month's schooling. Payment for non-school days such as holidays and semester breaks will be included if the inactive period is less than 8 weeks, and the veteran is a continuing student. Payment for classes missed due to illness or other excusable absences will be made as long as such absences do not become excessive and do not affect the Veteran's ability to maintain acceptable grades.
Overpayment
Overpayment can occur when the Veteran:
- Reduces the number of credit hours after certification
- Takes classes that are not authorized for payment
- Drops out of school after certification is sent to the VA
- Accepts advance pay and does not attend school
The Veteran must promptly notify the UVSC Veterans Office if any of the above-mentioned situations occur in order to maintain continuous benefits.
Collection of overpayment by the Veterans Regional Office will generally fall into one of the three following categories:
- The Veterans Regional Office will request reimbursement of the overpayment.
- If reimbursement arrangements are not made, the Veterans Regional Office may withhold the amount of the overpayment from any successive payments.
- Legal action may be taken in order to recover the overpaid amount.
