BOARD of TRUSTEES MEETING

Minutes

I.F.

Vice President Lucille Stoddard introduced Lisa Lambert and Jim Barnes from the Center for Teaching Excellence. She said the support the Center gives the faculty is pivotal. Ms. Lambert distributed books on the subject of teaching to the Board, and she commented that if they are invisible, they feel they are doing their job. The less the students are aware of their presence, the better. The best case scenerio would be if they could work their way out of being needed at all. She talked about how everything changes: the students, the subjects, society, and they need to educate the students accordingly.

Ms. Lambert distributed and reviewed a handout to the Board which covered a definition of the Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence, its mission, philosophy, objectives and strategy, and an explanation of the type of work the Center actually does.

Ms. Lambert explained that the Center supports good, scholarly teaching by assisting the faculty through integrating technology into the classroom. If the faculty are not integrating technology into their curriculum, the students are losing. Students need to be "knowledge workers" who can access current information and use it to solve problems. Now there is so much information for the students to choose from, and they need to learn what is good. Technology should have a purpose and should be critical to a presentation. Modeling is also critical to teaching, and they try to model good teaching practices in the Faculty Center. The teachers at the College are extremely busy and do not have time to go to the Center, so they tell them what they need and the Center takes it to them. Nothing is more difficult than being a good teacher. It is an incredibly exciting and demanding profession. She knows most of our faculty, and they work very, very hard for long hours. We bring training to the departments, and this is working well. Most faculty receive help the day they call with computer trouble shooting and teaching practices. [they use reflective teaching]

Ms. Lambert said she is a broker and project manager to help the teachers get what they need. To Co-Vice Chair Wilford Clyde?s inquiry, she said her staff consists of Ray Walker, Jim Barnes, and one administrative staff member. To Trustee Corrine Hill?s inquiry, she said they also work with adjunct faculty, however it is a major challenge, as there are over 400. She said they provide a non-threatening environment when helping the teachers. Trustee Baron Rohbock asked if she has any input from the students to help teach the teachers how to improve. Ms. Lambert said yes, they use the student faculty evaluations, and she finds that the students are very fair. She invited anyone who wished to visit the Faculty Center for Teaching which is in the Multi-Media area of the Library. She noted the space has become smaller, because they go to the offices where they are needed.
