Diabetes Prevention
What is it?
This program is designed to prevent diabetes and are for those who are considered in the pre-diabetic state. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are more likely to develop diabetes within 10 years and also are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
The risk factors for pre-diabetes are:
- Age - The risk of pre-diabetes increases with age
- Overweight - Defined as a body mass index (BMI) >25 (>23 if Asian American or >26 if Pacific Islander)
- Blood Pressure - 140/90 mm/Hg
- Abdnormal Lipid Levels - HDL cholesterol <40 mg.dL for men and <50 mg/dL for women; triglyceride level >250 mg/dL
- Family History - Paren, brother, or sister with diabetes
- Ethnicity - African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino or Pacific Islander heritage
- History of gestational diabetes - or gave birth to at least one baby weighing 9 lbs of more
- Inactive Lifestyle - exercises less than three times a week.
This program is not for those that are already diagnosed as Diabetic. It is a one-on-one program that will last approximately 8-10 weeks. Participants will receive information on Exercise, Nutrition, Weight Management, and Stress Management. This program is not a temporary plan, but a lifestyle change.
