Relief from Stress
Look for Causes
- Examine your life to see what causes you stress.
- Does work, time, money, your living situation or your relationship cause excessive stress?
Make Changes
- Minor hassles can create stress. Try simple solutions such as putting a hook by the door for your keys and leaving five minutes earlier.
- Take control where you can.
- Think of ways to relieve stress where you can't make changes.
Organize Your Life
- Make a schedule that allows enough time for work and relaxation. If this seems difficult, you may have too many commitments.
- Set priorities. Let go of less important commitments and learn to say no.
- If you can't let go of things, try delegating - especially in work situations.
- If money problems are creating stress in your life, make a budget and stick to it! Or, if a budget isn't enough, explore options for financial assistance.
Take Care of Yourself
- Exercise regularly.
- Make time for hobbies and play. Do something at least once a week just for fun.
- Include quiet time in your schedule.
- Remember to eat well and get plenty of rest.
Facing Major Changes
- Sometimes things beyond our control, such as a death in the family, loss of a job or moving, add to our stress level.
- During times of high stress, get additional help. Increase your exercise and quiet time.
Use Relaxation Techniques
- Close your eyes and picture yourself in a peaceful place, such as lying on a warm beach.
- Hold this image for five or ten minutes.
- Try deep breathing. Breathe in through your nose until you feel your stomach expand.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth. Do this 3-4 times.
- Meditate. Think of a positive statement, such as "I am relaxed and calm." Repeat this to yourself for five to fifteen minutes.
- Don't use alcohol or drugs to relieve stress. In the long run, they will only cause more problems.
