Relief from Stress

Look for Causes

  1. Examine your life to see what causes you stress.
  2. Does work, time, money, your living situation or your relationship cause excessive stress?

Make Changes

  1. Minor hassles can create stress. Try simple solutions such as putting a hook by the door for your keys and leaving five minutes earlier.
  2. Take control where you can.
  3. Think of ways to relieve stress where you can't make changes.

Organize Your Life

  1. Make a schedule that allows enough time for work and relaxation. If this seems difficult, you may have too many commitments.
  2. Set priorities. Let go of less important commitments and learn to say no.
  3. If you can't let go of things, try delegating - especially in work situations.
  4. If money problems are creating stress in your life, make a budget and stick to it! Or, if a budget isn't enough, explore options for financial assistance.

Take Care of Yourself

  1. Exercise regularly.
  2. Make time for hobbies and play. Do something at least once a week just for fun.
  3. Include quiet time in your schedule.
  4. Remember to eat well and get plenty of rest.

Facing Major Changes

  1. Sometimes things beyond our control, such as a death in the family, loss of a job or moving, add to our stress level.
  2. During times of high stress, get additional help. Increase your exercise and quiet time.

Use Relaxation Techniques

  1. Close your eyes and picture yourself in a peaceful place, such as lying on a warm beach.
  2. Hold this image for five or ten minutes.
  3. Try deep breathing. Breathe in through your nose until you feel your stomach expand.
  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Do this 3-4 times.
  5. Meditate. Think of a positive statement, such as "I am relaxed and calm." Repeat this to yourself for five to fifteen minutes.
  6. Don't use alcohol or drugs to relieve stress. In the long run, they will only cause more problems.
